11 Sponsors wanted for high school students!

SYJ already sponsors 9 high school students in Jasinga. SYJ does not pay the full amount. The parents have to contribute around 10%. They also have to take care of the books, pens, transport and uniforms. During the working visit in July 2008 we got introduced to 11 children that just finished ‘our’ school, S.D. 04. None of the parents of each of these 11 children can pay for their kids to go to high school. The children all want to go to school and the parents wished they could do so. This is possible however, the the support from Holland. We have increased the monthly payment for sponsors with 2 euros to 10 euros a month. After discussions with the parents and schools, it became clear the costs have gone up compared to the years before. All prizes in Indonesia have rissen strongly in the last year and food and fuel are more and more difficult to afford by the ‘normal’ people.

Els and Bep have gone in the Kampongs (suburbs) to visit the children at home. Together with the translater, they went from hut to hut. A group of excited children were constantly wlkaing with them as they really wanted to see these strange looking two white ‘ibu’s’ from real close. Els and Bep were welcomed friendly in every house. Most of the time they had to sit on the floor in a cross-legged position due to the lack of furniture. The children all wrote in a letter how much they wanted to go to school and how thankful they would be if we could support them in their wish. The parents too showed their thankfulness. Bep and Els were very impressed by the visits and especially the circumstances they live in.
